Performance Services

The Performance Services pillar within the ASDC – Calgary Region is designed to support provincial level athletes and coaches that currently do not have a training group within our region.  The ASDC – Calgary Region has successful developed a network of service providers in the community to provide performance enhancing services to all provincial level athletes and coaches.  The ASDC – Calgary Region will refer all provincial identified athletes (as per individual provincial sport association policies) within the region to service providers at no cost.

Athletes will have the opportunity to work with professionals who will collaborate, cooperate and facilitate services to ensure that athletes realize their full potential at competitions.

The following areas of discipline will be the focus of ASDC – Calgary Region.

1. Exercise Physiology

Elite athletes strive to perform at their optimum several times throughout the year in order to peak at major events. Our leading exercise physiologists ensure that the athletes remain competitive by identifying and measuring the physiological characteristics involved in particular sports, and by developing effective yearly training programs to improve the likelihood of success at specific events.

2. Sport Nutrition

Sound nutrition is essential in enabling athletes to perform at their best. With demanding training, travel and competition schedules, it is challenging for athletes to meet their necessary dietary requirements. Dietitians will provide nutritional guidance through computerized dietary analysis, drug and supplement awareness seminars, individual consulting and hands-on nutrition workshops to empower the athletes to make optimal choices that keep them fuelled for personal best performances.

3. Sport Psychology

Mental training is a vital component to an emerging athlete's training program. Armed with valuable mental skills, the athlete is able to demonstrate physical preparedness and attain peak performance at major events. Sport psychologists and mental trainers empower athletes by teaching and implementing essential visualization, stress management and problem-solving techniques.

4. Sport Medicine

The training demands that an emerging athlete face on a daily basis inevitably result in the risk of injury. Our medical experts include athletic therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists who focus on recovery and regeneration, not just from illness and injury, but from the rigors of training and competition. It is through this process that the longevity of the athlete is ensured and their performance enhanced.

These services are available for a fee to all provincially identified athletes and coaches.  Please contact the ASDC – Calgary Region office to verify your eligibility.

Goals:

  1. To create a centralized network of service providers that will work together to collaborate and cooperate by providing high quality services to emerging athletes & coaches
  2. To increase the number of athletes who use sport science or sport medicine professionals to increase podium performances
  3. To connect industry practitioners with Faculty to collaborate on best practices
